The committee’s aim was to establish and assist a local Aboriginal rugby league team to participate in the NSW Aboriginal Rugby League Knockout Carnival, held annually on the October long weekend.

Northern United was founded by the late Ali Bolt Snr and Coraki Elder Russell Kapeen. They both dreamt of not only taking a strong Northern Rivers side to the NSW Aboriginal Knockout, but winning this coveted event and bringing it back to Bundjalung country. Ali and Russell then enlisted the help of Noel King Snr, Steven Roberts Snr, Lester Moran Snr, Walter Kelly, Christy Bolt and local rugby league identity Chris Binge Snr.

The club debuted at the NSW Aboriginal Knockout in 2004 and was narrowly beaten 9-8. At this time the Committee saw that Northern United had also unleashed talented young players – Daine Laurie, Brenton Cochrane, Alwyn Roberts, Sione Tonga, Chris King and Clarence Kelly onto the rugby league scene. They then dreamt of having an Indigenous team in the local rugby league competition (then named) the Northern Rivers Regional Rugby League Competition, after the old Group 1 & Group 18 competitions combined.
